Transmission Gears

Free forging, also known as open die forging, is a metalworking process where a heated metal billet is shaped by compressive forces applied between dies that don't fully enclose the material. 

Metal Forging gear:

  • Carbon steel forging, such as ASTM A29/A29M(1030, 1040, 1045, 1050, etc)
  • Alloy steel forging,  such as SAE J1249 (4140, 4340, 8140, 8630, etc)
  • Stainless steel forging, such as ASTM A959 (304, 316, 316L, etc)

Free forging or heavy forging process:

Free forging, also known as open die forging, is a metalworking process where a heated metal billet is shaped by compressive forces applied between dies that don’t fully enclose the material.

The heat treatment process for forged gears is crucial to enhance their mechanical properties, such as hardness, strength, toughness, and wear resistance.

  1. Normalizing

Purpose: Refines grain structure, relieves internal stresses, and improves machinability before final hardening.

Process: Heating the gear to 800–950°C (1472–1742°F), holding, then air cooling.

Used for: Medium-carbon steels (e.g., AISI 1045, 4140) as a pre-treatment.

  1. Annealing

Purpose: Softens the material for better machinability and stress relief.

Process: Heating to critical temperature (750–900°C / 1382–1652°F), slow furnace cooling.

Used for: High-alloy steels or complex gear shapes requiring extensive machining.

  1. Quenching & Tempering (Hardening + Tempering)

Purpose: Achieve high hardness by rapid cooling (martensite formation).

Process: Heat to 820–950°C (1508–1742°F), then quench in oil, water, or polymer.

Tempering:

Purpose: Reduce brittleness while maintaining strength.

Process: Reheat to 150–650°C (302–1202°F) and air cool.

Used for: High-strength gears (e.g., AISI 4340, 8620).

  1. Case Hardening (Surface Hardening)

Carburizing: Heat gear in a carbon-rich environment (~900–950°C / 1652–1742°F), then quench. Result: Hard surface (~55–65 HRC) with a tough core.

Induction Hardening: Localized heating via induction coil, then quenching. Used for large gears where only tooth surfaces need hardening.

Nitriding: Heating in nitrogen-rich atmosphere (~500–550°C / 932–1022°F). Extreme surface hardness with minimal distortion.

  1. Stress Relieving

Purpose: Reduce residual stresses after rough machining or forging.

Process: Heat to 550–650°C (1022–1202°F), slow cool.

  1. Austempering & Martempering (Specialized Processes)

Austempering: Quenching in molten salt to form bainite (toughness + wear resistance).

Martempering: Reduces quenching distortion by controlled cooling.
