What’s carbon steel?

Carbon steel is a common type of steel that is an alloy of iron and carbon. It has a higher carbon content from 0.12% to 2.5%. Other elements, such as manganese, silicon, sulfur, and phosphorous, are also present in samller amounts. And the carbon steel is broken down into 3 classes based on carbon content:

Low-carbon steel, also known as mild steel, is a metal alloy that contains iron and carbon, with a carbon content of usually less than 0.3%. Low carbon steel is less expensive, more malleable and ductile than high-carbon steel and widely applications, including automotive parts, pipe fittings, construction, agriculture, and others. Mild steel has a tensile strength of 400-550 MPa.

Medium-carbon steel is a type of carbon steel with a carbon content ranging between 0.3% and 0.6%. It also has a manganese content between 0.6% and 1.65% percent, which offe a balance between the strength and ductility. The medium carbon steel is commonly used for shafts, gears, axles, crankshafts, railway, tracks casting, train wheels, and other machinery components.

High-carbon steel is the name given to any steel with 0.6% or higher carbon content. The high carbon steel is with high strength, high hardness and more brittle than meidum carbon steel. High carbon steel is used for knife blades, hand tools, gears, bearing, springs, vehicle frames, door panels, automotive suspension components and heavy machinery parts.

Carbon steel investment casting process

1	Patterns Makings	Creating a wax mold of the desired stainless steel pump impellers, and then adding sprues to the wax model to create a tree-like structure.
2	Shell Building	Coating the wax pattern with a layer of fire-resistant paint, and then to be sprinkled with sand, so after a period of hardening, the surface will form a layer of fire-resistant thin shell.
3	Dewaxing	Removing the wax, the shell is placed into an oven, melting the wax so that it can run out of the shell.
4	Pouring	Pouring the molten low carbon steel into the shell, and waiting for solidification under room temperature.
5	Post treatment	After cooling, knock the shell and cut the sprue gate by grinding machinery to achieve net shape impeller castings. Then shot blasting to move mill scales to assure the smooth casting surface.
6	Machining	CNC Machining
