CW617N Lead Brass Forging Process Details

Material & Process Fundamentals

CW617N (CuZn40Pb2) is a high-performance lead brass alloy specifically engineered for precision hot forging. Its unique (α+β) dual-phase microstructure, combined with finely dispersed lead particles, delivers exceptional hot workability and machinability, making it the ideal material for complex instrument components like meter housings, valve bodies, and gauge fittings. Our forging process is fully optimized for CW617N to ensure defect-free, high-strength parts that meet the strict requirements of industrial instrumentation.

 

Drop forging is a highly valued metal forging process that uses a pair of impression dies and a heavy hammer to form and compress metal bars or billets into complex shapes. The steel forged clevis end yoke are with high density, good mechanical properties and wear resistance, compared with casting rod end yoke.

Material Selection Choose the appropriate metal (e.g., carbon steel, alloy steel, aluminum, or titanium) based on the component’s requirements. Ensure the required steel meets the required chemical composition and quality standards. Baoding Guokun will test the material’s chemical composition before storage.
Billet Preparation Cut the raw material into billets of the required size. And heat the billet to the forging temperature (typically 1100°C–1200°C for steel) to make it malleable
Die design and preparation Design the dies (upper and lower) to match the final shape of the component. Dies are typically made from high-strength tool steel and are precision-machined.
Forging Place the heated billet into the lower die. Apply pressure using a hydraulic or mechanical press to force the metal into the die cavity. The metal fills the die, taking the shape of the mold
Flash Formation & Trimming Excess metal, called flash, flows out of the die cavity through small gaps. Remove the flash and excess material using trimming dies or machining
Cooling Allow the forged part to cool slowly (for some materials) or control the cooling rate to achieve desired properties.
Heat Treatment Perform heat treatment processes like normalizing, quenching, and tempering to enhance mechanical properties (e.g., hardness, toughness)
Finishing Machine the forged part to achieve precise dimensions and surface finish. Apply surface treatments (e.g., sand blasting, coating) if required

Full Production Process Flow

  1. Raw Material Inspection: Verify CW617N brass rod material certificate, chemical composition, and mechanical properties
  2. Billet Cutting: Cut rods to precise lengths based on part weight and die design
  3. Induction Heating: Heat billets to the optimal forging temperature with uniform heating
  4. Closed-Die Hot Forging: Form the near-net-shape instrument component in precision dies
  5. Trimming & Shot Blasting: Remove flash, clean surface, and improve surface finish
  6. Stress-Relief Annealing: Eliminate residual forging stress
  7. Precision Machining: Complete final machining for threads, bores, and critical dimensions
  8. Final Inspection & Packaging: 100% quality check before shipment
