Description

The pump impeller is the rotating component in the pump that directly transfers the energy from the motor into the fluid being pumped. Pump impellers are classified as one of three types: Open impeller, semi-open impeller, or closed impeller. Their classification is based on whether they have a protective shroud or not.

Cast iron pump impellers are generally used in small, low-cost pumps for water supply drainage, irrigation or industrial application. Cast iron impellers are with good castability, machinability and vibration damping properties.

Compared with bronze impeller or stainless-steel pump impeller, grey cast iron impellers are less resistant to corrosion, erosion and cavitation. Because cast iron will always rust in water environments, and crevice corrosion can occur in casting components. But cast-iron impellers are robust and cost-effective, ideal for handling abrasive fluids in applications like mining, construction, and agriculture.

A cast iron impeller is typically made from gray iron as it is the most common cast iron due to its good castability, machinability, and vibration damping properties, although in situations requiring higher strength and impact resistance, ductile iron might be used instead.
