Gray iron is a cast iron with a graphitic microstructure that’s commonly used for its low cost and attractive properties. It is often used in applications where stiffness is more important than tensile strength, such as: Pump castings, motor castings, marine castings, valve castings, counterweight, agricultural castings and gearboxes castings.
ASTM A48 Class 35 gray cast iron, HT250, EN-GJL-250, GG25, FC250, FGL250, G25, T250, O125 or ISO Grade 250
The composition of gray cast iron is 2.5%-4% carbon, 1%-3% silicon, and some additions of manganese ranging from 0.1% to 1.2%.
What is lost foam casting process?
Lost-foam casting is a type of evaporative-pattern casting process that is similar to investment casting except foam is used for the pattern instead of wax. The lost foam casting techniques take advantage of the low boiling point of polymer foams to simplify the investment casting process by removing the need of melt the wax out of the mold. Compared with investment casting method and sand casting techniques, lost foam casting is one of the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly metal casting process for creating complex and intricate metal parts by using a foam pattern that evaporates when molten metal is poured into it:
